Below, I've outlined both technical skills and soft skills which I possess. To view further examples of my work, please visit the portfolio area of this website.
> Technical Skills
> Web Development
Proficient in (X)HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, and ColdFusion. During development I conform to web standards. I have implemented and improved upon these skills over a number of years. From 2004-2005, I maintained the Mearns Academy website whilst I was a pupil there. This also provided me with experience of Macromedia Dreamweaver. View websites I've worked on.
> Database Systems
Knowledge of a number of database systems including MySQL (4 years experience), Oracle, MSSQL 2005 and MS Access. In addition to this, for 2 semesters, I was a teaching assistant at University, aiding first years to understand the concepts and importance behind data modeling.
> Java
Competent in Java- have studied Java for 5 years at University, learning the basic concepts of object-oriented programming. Completed several Java ME applications during the course of the MSc Internet Computing degree. View Java programs I've developed.
> VB.NET
Good knowledge of Visual Basic .NET. Completed several small portfolios for a module at university, consisting of small, basic programs. Also wrote a photo gallery program in this language as part of my Honours Project. View VB.NET programs I've created.
> Microsoft Office
Experienced with the use of Microsoft Office- have used this software for the majority reports and presentations I have created since 1999.
> Soft Skills
> Communication Skills
Excellent communication skills- over the years I've had multiple opportunities to develop my communication skills. In my role as student demonstrator, I had to explain concepts to students, ensuring they understood, using whatever means necessary e.g. drawing diagrams, discussing concepts with them and showing them examples.
I also developed my communication skills whilst at working Journeycall. When dealing with customers over the phone, their needs have to be assessed quickly and effectively.
> Lateral Thinker
Again, in my role as a student demonstrator, I had to explain various computing related topic to students, ranging from 1st to 4th year at University level. Occasionally, students had difficulty understanding a concept therefore, lateral thinking skills were useful in allowing me to explain the problem from a different angle.
> Team Player
Ability to work well in a team- I have used my team work skills on many occasions at University because working with others was an integral part of the Computing course. In addition to this, I have also used my team skills while I was a Prefect at Mearns Academy from 2004-2005.
